Whether you’re using one to store extra furniture, files, clothes, items for a business, or even a vehicle or boat, they are an inexpensive way to keep your important belongings safe and reduce clutter in your home or workplace. However, there is an art to organizing your self-storage unit to get the most out of the space. We’ve all heard of the television show “Storage Wars,” and no one wants to go digging around a cluttered unit desperately searching for the one item that they just know they put in there months ago.

Clean it Out
Most facilities do a great job of ensuring your unit is empty when you are ready to move your things in, but sometimes they are full of dust, debris, or cobwebs that have collected over time. It’s important to start with a clean slate, so bring a broom and give the floors and corners a good sweep.
Think Before You Fill
Before you begin packing items to go into your unit, think about the things you will be moving into that space. Organize your belongings into piles, separating out things you may wish to access periodically, like holiday decorations, and things that are being stored for the long haul, like archived files.
Pack According to Climate
If you score a climate-controlled space, using cardboard boxes should work fine. Without extreme fluctuations in temperature, you won’t have to worry about mold and mildew. However, if you are in a unit without climate control you can easily preserve your belongings by packing in plastic bins. They will stay dry and air tight, and you can always add a commercial moisture absorber if you want additional protection.
Labels Are Your Friend
Label everything in bold lettering on the forward-facing side of the box or bin. If there are a variety of items in the container be specific, especially if some of the items are things you might want to access. It’s always easier to find what you’re looking for if you have a sign pointing you right to it!
Once you’re all moved in, make a quick inventory of the items in your unit. Some people draw a quick diagram and attach it to the inside of the door so that they remember the general placement of important items. Others find it helpful to take a photo inventory using their cell phone.
